Benson’s Hospitality Group originated in 1960 with the development of the original Holiday Inn adjacent to the University of Georgia’s north campus. By 1996, the company had expanded by acquiring a nearby Ramada Inn and converting it into a Holiday Inn Express. In 2006, the firm added a Hilton Garden Inn across from the Classic Center, and in 2008 it opened its first SpringHill Suites by Marriott in West Athens. Its most recent hotel, a second SpringHill Suites by Marriott, launched in 2018 in downtown Athens. Currently, Benson’s Hospitality Group operates three award-winning hotels in Athens, Georgia: Holiday Inn Express, SpringHill Suites/West Athens, and SpringHill Suites/Downtown. A fourth property—a renovated Courtyard by Marriott— is slated to open in Spring 2025, and redevelopment of the original Holiday Inn site will begin summer 2025, with plans for a new downtown hotel.
