Self-Help Enterprises (SHE) is a nonprofit housing and community development organization based in Visalia, California. Founded in 1965, the organization has more than 60 years of operating history and serves communities throughout California’s San Joaquin Valley. SHE employs approximately 200–500 people and works across eight counties, focusing on housing, infrastructure, and community development initiatives for low-income households and farmworker communities. The organization is one of the nation’s largest providers of mutual self-help housing, a model in which families contribute labor toward the construction of their own homes. Since its founding, SHE has helped build more than 6,400 owner-occupied homes, rehabilitated over 6,800 existing homes, and developed more than 2,000 affordable rental housing units. Its programs have assisted more than 65,000 families across the region.
