Champlain Housing Trust (CHT) is a nonprofit community land trust based in Burlington, Vermont, and one of the largest organizations of its type in the United States. Founded in 1984 and formed through the 2006 merger of the Burlington Community Land Trust and the Lake Champlain Housing Development Corporation, CHT has more than 40 years of experience in affordable housing development, ownership, and stewardship across northwestern Vermont. The organization employs approximately 146 staff members and serves Chittenden, Franklin, and Grand Isle counties. CHT focuses on permanently affordable housing through a community land trust model. Its portfolio includes more than 2,500 affordable apartments, approximately 675 shared-equity homes, over 100 shelter beds and transitional housing units, five housing cooperatives, and roughly 140,000 square feet of commercial space. The organization also provides homebuyer education, financial counseling, affordable lending programs, and property rehabilitation assistance.
